Yes, it's early, but that does not make the 6-11 record the SF Giants currently have look any better. The team has looked alright at times so far, but there has been far more cause for concern than cause for excitement or relief.
At some point the Giants are going to have to shake things up and make some roster moves simply to try to get some sort of momentum rolling. When they do, there are five players who probably should not be on the roster by the end of April who could either be demoted or let go as the team attempts to figure things out.
5 SF Giants players who are blocking potential solutions
Jerar Encarnacion
The Giants added the tall right-handed slugger Jerar Encarnacion to the big league roster after a strong spring training. It's not really clear what purpose he serves on the roster, though.
He has played a little bit and has a .227 batting average on the year, but with Casey Schmitt seeing time as the designated hitter recently it seems like Encarnacion is not really in a position to be a contributor.
Maybe he could see some pinch hit opportunities or see some starts in the outfield, but with Bryce Eldridge knocking on the door it seems like Encarnacion's time with the team could come to an end soon since he is out of minor league options.
Jared Oliva
San Francisco added Jared Oliva to the roster after he flashed his impressive speed in spring training. The only problem is he hasn't had a chance to flash that speed in the regular season because the Giants' offense hasn't provided a ton of opportunities for him to pinch run. Plus, he has just one hit in seven at-bats so far.
On a different, perhaps more offensively competent, team Oliva might make sense, but the Giants need guys who can hit and both Drew Gilbert and Will Brennan have been swinging hot bats in Triple-A. Oliva is a nice story but it's hard to justify his place on the roster for much longer.
Christian Koss
This one may come as a bit of a surprise, but Christian Koss has not done much either so far. Like Oliva, he has just one hit in seven at-bats thus far and it's hard to see how he will get more playing time.
If everyone is healthy, every position in the infield is spoken for. Koss is a great guy to have fill in if there are injuries, but with the outfield needing more help than the infield at the moment the Giants should consider sending Koss to Triple-A and promoting a hot-hitting outfielder.
Ryan Borucki
It feels like beating a dead horse at this point but Ryan Borucki has not looked very good so far for San Francisco. He has an 8.44 ERA in six appearances and other than coming in as a mop-up arm when the team is either up or down big, it really does not seem like he is going to factor into the team's bullpen equation long-term.
There are some pitchers dealing in Triple-A Sacramento who would be much better options than Borucki at this point.
JT Brubaker
While Brubaker's numbers are a bit better than Borucki's as he has a 3.24 ERA in seven appearances, he too occupies a low-leverage reliever position in the bullpen. The Giants do not need two of those types of pitchers and Brubaker has walked seven batters in 8 and 1/3 innings which is alarming.
It may feel too early to make wholesale roster changes, but if the Giants continue on their current trajectory then they will simply have no other choice.
