It’s the holiday season, and SF Giants fans have a significant wish list this year they would like to see glistening under the Giants’ tree. We all have more realistic wishes for the Giants offseason. You know, like the Christmas list you give to Grandma and Grandpa.
However, there is a childlike pipe dream we all have for our team and there’s only one guy that can pull off something so huge: Santa Claus. Hopefully Buster Posey has been good this year and can get a word in with the big guy. So, just like Ralphie desperately asking Old Saint Nick for the seemingly impossible gift of a Red Rider BB Gun, here are five moves Giants fans will have to write to the North Pole for this year…
5 dream wishes SF Giants fans can ask Santa for ahead of Christmas
Trade for and extend Tarik Skubal
It’s no secret the Tigers ace and arguably the best pitcher in baseball could be available via trade before he hits the free agent market. It would certainly take a strong prospect haul (maybe including Bryce Eldridge?), but when you have a chance to get a player of Skubal’s caliber, you push all your chips to the center of the table. The trade is only part of the list here though. An extension makes this even more of a wish in Santa’s wheelhouse. Instead of sugarplums, dreams of dancing changeups would be in Giants fans’ heads.
Sign Kyle Tucker
The Giants have a glaring need for outfield production on both sides of the ball and nobody on the market is better suited to take on that role than Kyle Tucker. Another middle of the order bat and a Gold Glove caliber fielder, Tucker would be the crown jewel of position player acquisitions this year. If Santa brought him to San Francisco, Levi’s Landing would surely serenade the new right fielder with echoes of Will Ferrell’s character in Elf, “I love you, I love you, I love youuuuu!!!!!”
Sign Tatsuya Imai
He’s already said he would love to play Grinch to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Whoville they’ve built. Tatsuya Imai is arguably the best pitcher available on the free agency market since being posted on November 19th. Santa and the Giants already missed Black Friday to add the Japanese ace, but the idea of a front end rotation consisting of Skubal, Webb, and Imai would be sweeter than candy canes and hot chocolate.
Trade for Mason Miller
The Giants still need a bona fide closer and just like the gingerbread man, you can’t catch Mason Miller’s fastball. He would certainly cost a premium since he would be coming to town from within the division, but the Giants desperately need bullpen arms with swing and miss stuff. Miller would lock down the 9th inning and could provide the Giants with the best bullpen in baseball again.
Sign Bo Bichette
To round out the lineup and result in quite an intimidating roster rivalling even Santa’s sleigh team, who better to add than Bo Bichette and put him at the keystone sack? The Giants have looked into upgrading at second base this offseason, and the team would even benefit from having Casey Schmitt as the first man off the bench since he can play all four infield positions.
Understandably, these moves would put the Giants well into the luxury tax close to on par with the Dodgers and would absolutely decimate their prospect pool. However, it would be worth it having the current roster combined with these moves and could make the Giants the prohibitive favorites to bring more World Series titles to the Bay Area for years to come. The whole point of writing to Santa is to shoot for the moon, and if he brings the Giants their wishes, fans would be like George Bailey, celebrating together that it’s A Wonderful Life.
