Every holiday season, kids write up extensive wish lists to make sure everyone in their family knows exactly what they are hoping to get for Christmas. It seems like the SF Giants may be having Christmas on a self-imposed budget this offseason.
Here are five realistic targets for San Francisco Giants fans to put on their wish list this offseason.
5 realistic targets who should be on every SF Giants fan's wishlist this Christmas
1. Trade for Brendan Donovan
The Giants desperately need a second baseman, and they've been connected to the St. Louis second baseman for a while now. Every Giants fan would love to see Donovan come to San Francisco, especially after finding out Ketel Marte (the top second baseman trade target available) is likely no longer an option, due to his no-trade list.
2. Sign a veteran right fielder
The Giants have a bunch of right fielders, but none that the team would feel comfortable with as their opening day starter. That is, obviously, an issue, and the team needs to sign a veteran corner outfielder to steady the ship. If Drew Gilbert is the long-term plan, supplementing him next year with a veteran on a one-year deal would make a lot of sense. There are plenty of options here; Rob Refsnyder, Mike Tauchman, Austin Hays, or Max Kepler could all be viable corner outfield options for the Giants to sign.
3. Bring back Justin Verlander
Justin Verlander is no longer a "splashy" signing, but he would still be welcomed back to the Bay with open arms. The Giants still need starting pitching depth, and Verlander wants to pitch in 2026. A reunion makes plenty of sense. At this stage in his career, does the veteran really want to move to another new team? He was good in the second half of the season for the Giants, and running it back would benefit both the player and the team.
4. Sign Pete Fairbanks
Fairbanks has a 2.87 ERA since 2020 with the Tampa Bay Rays and is still just 32 years old. As a reliever, he should have at least a few more good years ahead of him, and he's been one of the most consistent leverage options in the league for the past six seasons. He'd be a solid option at closer or as the Giants' set-up man.
5. Bring in a utility man
Even if the Giants were to add a second baseman like Donovan, it would also be helpful to add a utility man to the roster. San Francisco could shoot for the stars on a player like Willi Castro, or go for a cheaper option like Dylan Moore or Luis Rengifo. Either way, a utility-man would be helpful, especially with Matt Chapman's injury history. The Giants need a reliable fifth infielder who can play any position and fill a valuable role on the bench.
These wishes may not be the most exciting for Giants fans, but they are realistic since it does not seem like the Giants are preparing to make a big splash.
