The SF Giants are going to try to upgrade their pitching staff this offseason, but there are still a few spots in their lineup that could use an upgrade. If the Giants want a major upgrade at second base, they could pursue Toronto Blue Jays star Bo Bichette.
He is a player who was linked to the Giants in the past as a potential target when the team was still looking for a star shortstop. However, Toronto decided to shut down any trade talks on him which proved to be a wise move as Bichette had a great bounce back campaign in 2025.
SF Giants could make a play for Bichette to improve at second base
In 2025, Bichette slashed .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 94 runs driven in. He played through an injury in the playoffs and provided a heroic moment in Game 7 of the World Series as he blasted a three-run homer off Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani although the Blue Jays ultimately lost in heartbreaking fashion.
Now, Bichette will hit free agency and he figures to make a substantial chunk of change. A recent projection has him landing an eight-year, $212 million deal in free agency. That is a lot of money, and almost certainly not a contract that the Giants would be willing to hand out to a guy to play second base.
Still, second base is a potential area of improvement for the Giants. Casey Schmitt was the starting second baseman for most of 2025 and he did a fine job both at the plate and defensively. The safest, and most cost-effective, bet would be to just put him out there again as the starting second baseman with Christian Koss and Tyler Fitzgerald behind him on the depth chart as insurance.
However, for a Giants team that struggled to put the ball in play and make contact, signing a guy who hit .311 last year could go a long way towards improving the lineup even though it would come at a very steep cost and would come with risk considering he slashed .225/.277/.322 in 2024 although that is a pretty jarring outlier when compared with the rest of his career.
The Giants pursuing Bichette seems unlikely, but if he is not able to land that long-term contract that he seeks and he remains available into next year, maybe the Giants could make a play for him on a short-term deal.
