The SF Giants have gotten off to a very strong start to the 2025 season. Two offseason decisions they made are already paying huge dividends while they probably regret a trade they made in the offseason at least a little bit.

2 SF Giants offseason decisions that already look genius, 1 that looks awful

Signing Willy Adames

San Francisco made a huge splash early in free agency by signing shortstop Willy Adames to the largest contract in franchise history. The hope was that he would be a star power threat in the middle of the order and that has not come to fruition yet which is exactly why it was a genius signing.

The Giants have had their great start despite the fact that Adames has really not heated up at the plate yet. Sure, he did have a key two-run double in Houston that helped the team get the win and he had an absolutely clutch walk-off single in the team's home opener.

Yet, he has not flashed a lot of the power that he gained a reputation for during his time in Milwaukee. Once he starts to find a groove and hits the long ball then the move will look even better.

However, why the signing already looks great is that it is clear Adames is having a positive impact on the team thanks to his positive vibes and sunny personality. Having a great clubhouse guy like that cannot be quantified. Guys like that make everyone around them better even if they are not at the top of their game.

For example, when the Giants traded for Hunter Pence in 2012 he did not do great for the team in the regular season. In 59 games, he slashed .219/.287/.384 with 7 home runs and 45 RBI. Those numbers are not that good, but there is no way the Giants win the World Series that year were it not for Pence's leadership and inspiration with his legendary dugout sermons.

Bringing back Wilmer Flores

It was not a given that Wilmer Flores was going to be back with the Giants in 2025. After he struggled and dealt with injury in 2024, there was a real chance that the team would have cut him or traded him if they felt they could upgrade his spot on the roster.

Instead, Buster Posey and the new front office regime showed faith in Flores by holding onto him after he exercised his $3.5 million player option in the offseason.

It has paid off in a huge way as Flores has looked like a completely changed player now that he is not dealing with a knee injury. He is slashing .265/.306/.618 with four home runs and 12 RBI. Included in that was a clutch go-ahead three-run homer on Opening Day and a walk-off single in Sunday's contest.

Wilmer has been a very good Giant for a long time and he is rewarding the team's faith in him so far this season.

Now let's turn to one offseason move the team may regret.

Trading Taylor Rogers

The only major trade the Giants have made in the (second) Buster Posey era was to ship left-handed relief pitcher Taylor Rogers to the Cincinnati Reds in what essentially amounted to a salary dump move. It was an odd move at the time but thankfully the team's bullpen has still been strong without the left-handed Rogers twin.

Rogers has looked good in Cincinnati though. He has yet to allow a run in 3 and 1/3 innings pitched. That is obviously a small sample size, but it would be nice if the Giants had another left-handed option in the bullpen right now alongside Erik Miller.

The Rogers trade is more of a nitpick as the Giants probably do not regret too much from the offseason given how well the start of the season has gone.

We will see how these things evolve as the season progresses, but as of right now these are the moves that look very wise along with the one that still seems a little bit odd.
