Argenis Cayama tallied five hitless innings against the Stockton Ports last week. That was enough for the younger SF Giants hurler to earn California League Pitcher of the Week honors.

The San Jose Giants faced off against the Ports at home in a six-game series. They won the first four games, including Cayama’s strong outing, but dropped the final two games.

Overall, San Jose is off to an encouraging 25-20 start. They are tied with the Fresno Grizzlies for first place in the North Division. Interestingly, four teams in the California League have a 25-20 record to start the season. As of Tuesday morning, San Jose is in a four-way tie for the best record.

The offense has led the way for San Jose. They lead the league by averaging 7.18 runs per game, and are in second with an .839 OPS. Dario Reynoso (139 wRC+), Hayden Jatczak (136 wRC +), Isaiah Barkett (135 wRC+), and Jhonny Level (131 wRC+) has anchored the lineup. Level is one of the younger position players in the league, and that adds more substance to the numbers he is putting up.

SF Giants hurler Argenis Cayama has held his own in a tough pitcher’s environment

The league has proven to be a tough environment for pitchers. San Jose’s pitching staff is fourth in the league with a 5.51 ERA, and only one team has an ERA below five.

While Argenis Cayama has a 4.91 ERA across eight starts, there is a strong case to make that he has pitched better than that. He had one rough outing, where he allowed seven earned runs while recording just two outs.

Cayama has also posted a 4.36 FIP, 12.3 K/9, 6.43 SO/W rate, and a 51.9 percent ground ball rate. The SO/W rate is a strong predictor for success at the next level.

The right-handed pitcher completed five hitless frames with five strikeouts and two walks in a 9-7 win over the Ports. It marked the second time he did not allow an earned run this year, and the fourth time he has yielded fewer than two earned runs.

On the mound, Cayama features two different fastballs that sit in the low-to-mid 90’s. His sinker is effective at getting ground balls. He throws a low 80’s breaking ball that is his go-to secondary, and mixes in a mid 80’s changeup. Cayama has a repeatable delivery, and fills up the strike zone with all of his pitches.
