The SF Giants are running out of options to upgrade in the outfield. Kyle Tucker has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers because why not? Cody Bellinger is back with the New York Yankees. So where can the Giants turn now?
Right field is still a clear spot the Giants can upgrade as the offseason wanes. The Giants have internal options they can throw out there like Drew Gilbert and Luis Matos, but it would be a risk to lean on those guys heavily.
Would the Giants entertain a reunion with a player many fans are annoyed by in Michael Conforto?
SF Giants can, but shouldn't, entertain reunion with Michael Conforto
Conforto spent two seasons in San Francisco from 2023 to 2024. He was decent for the Giants as he slashed a collective .238/.322/.418 with 35 home runs and 124 runs batted in across those two seasons.
Considering he was coming off an injury that kept him out all of 2022, he did alright even if he was a far cry from the guy he was during his best days with the New York Mets.
After 2024, Conforto signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His numbers on the year were dreadful as he slashed .199/.305/.333 with 12 home runs and 36 runs batted in, but somehow he seemed to do damage against the Giants every time he faced them which was supremely annoying.
It seemed like the Dodgers might get rid of him at some point because of his struggles, but they kept him even though he did not really factor into things during the playoffs.
So, would it make any sense for the Giants to bring him back?
We could do some mental contortions and try to talk ourselves into how he is a veteran and has had modest success with the Giants in the past, but no, just, no.
Give us Drew Gilbert for 162 games as he hits .175 but gets choked by Matt Chapman when he hits his first homer of the year in July while providing above average defense over another meh year from Conforto.
Conforto has reportedly drawn some interest from the Chicago White Sox so let him go there before he gets anywhere near Oracle Park.
The Giants do not seem to have a clear plan for what to do in right field, but Conforto just cannot be the answer. Roll with the young guys or bring in a genuine upgrade like Harrison Bader, but the Giants should not entertain bringing in an average-at-best veteran just for the sake of having a more proven option out there in a season where they are unlikely to be all that competitive.
