The SF Giants have reportedly agreed to a seven-year $182 million contract with shortstop Willy Adames per Jeff Passan of ESPN. However, there is still one pesky thing in the way before this all becomes official...a physical.
The very word may give Giants fans PTSD from the Carlos Correa saga that occurred in 2022. For those who do not remember or have chosen to forget, the Giants agreed to a 13-year $350 million deal with shortstop Carlos Correa. Then, just before the press conference announcing the signing, the press conference was postponed and news trickled out that the Giants had concerns about Correa's physical, namely his ankle.
SF Giants Willy Adames signing not official until he passes that pesky physical
The next thing we knew, the agreement between the two sides fell through and Correa agreed to a contract with the New York Mets. Of course, that deal fell through as well over concerns with the ankle and Correa ended up going to the Minnesota Twins.
It will forever be a joke amongst Giants fans to wait until the physical is passed when a free agent signing is announced.
With Adames, there should not be too much concern about his injury history. In every 162-game-long season since 2019 he has played in the following number of games: 152 in 2019, 140 in 2021, 139 in 2022, 149 in 2023, and 161 in 2024. That is very solid durability and makes one hope he will be a reliable fixture on the field for the Giants for the duration of his contract.
Of course, maybe Giants ownership will get cold feet and decide that $182 million is a lot of money. Word may begin to leak out from sources that upon X-Ray examination Willy Adames has a wrenched ankle in addition to an apple in his throat and some butterflies in his stomach.
In the event that does not happen, it seems the Giants have landed themselves a very good shortstop. He solves several problems for them by giving them a dependable glove at short, a power threat in the lineup who hit 32 homers in 2024, and a sneaky speed threat as he stole 21 bases last season.
He checks off a lot of boxes for the team and will look good in orange and black. Assuming, of course, that he passes that pesky physical.
