The SF Giants just designated infielder Sergio Alcántara for assignment a few days ago, but the versatile infielder has just cleared waivers and was outrighted which means he can elect free agency or return to Triple-A Sacramento.

Alcántara was called up to the Giants for just one game before the Giants placed him on waivers. He went 0-4 with two strikeouts and made a fielding error playing third base as the Giants were crushed by the Sacramento Athletics on July 4th.

It was not exactly the best audition for other teams out there, so it was not a huge surprise that teams passed when he was up for grabs. It was also Alcántara's first MLB action since 2022 with the San Diego Padres so it had been a while since he had a taste of the big leagues.

Alcántara is known for being a glove-first player. His batting average in Triple-A this season has been a measly .206 so the Giants were definitely not expecting him to tear the cover off the ball in his brief showing with the team.

The only reason they called him up is because their infielder ranks had been thinned out due to injury. First Matt Chapman went down, then Casey Schmitt, shortly followed by Christian Koss. Alcántara was way down on the depth chart but he got a brief opportunity thanks to all of those injuries.

Thankfully, both Chapman and Schmitt have returned and are back in the lineup. Both players were dearly missed for what they bring to the table both on offense and defense. It really hurt when both guys went down because they were both hot at the plate at the time of their respective injuries and San Francisco's offense has struggled throughout this season.

Plus, Chapman is a five-time Gold Glove winner at third and Schmitt has proven he can handle every position in the infield so having him at second base is a huge bonus.

We will have to see what Alcántara elects to do, but it seems unlikely that the Giants will have to call upon him again this season even if they do retain him. Yet, if the injuries pile up you never know. Brett Wisely, Tyler Fitzgerald, and Koss are all ahead of him on the depth chart but we have seen how quickly injuries can change things this season.
