The SF Giants made several roster moves the other day to try and address their lack of infield depth as they deal with injuries to multiple players. The guy they called up, versatile infielder Sergio Alcántara, lasted just one game before he was designated for assignment.

Alcántara only played in Friday's game against the Athletics and went 0-4 with two strikeouts and he also made a fielding error playing at third base. It was not exactly the most memorable performance and his Giants career is going to be very short-lived it seems.

The Giants moved on from Alcántara because they fortunately got back their everyday third baseman Matt Chapman after nearly a month on the IL. Chapman had a very brief rehab stint with the Sacramento River Cats but is now back with the Giants after the injury to his right hand.

San Francisco has had tough luck with their infielders as of late. Chapman got hurt and then not long after that his replacement Casey Schmitt, who was on fire at the plate, got hit by a pitch in his left hand which landed him on the IL. Then Schmitt's replacement Christian Koss, another guy who was hitting the ball great, had to go on the IL with a hamstring injury.

Thankfully, the Giants should get Schmitt back soon as well so they are beginning to get healthy again after a rough couple of weeks.

Alcántara could end up clearing waivers and rejoining the River Cats if no team claims him. He was only hitting .206 prior to being promoted to the Giants and had not played in the big leagues since 2022 prior to Friday night so he may not have a large number of suitors.

The Giants signed him as a depth piece in the offseason and he at the very least did give the team some versatility defensively given the fact he can play third base, second base, and shortstop. He is thought of as a plus defender which made his error on Friday a little surprising, but it can happen to the best of them.

If his one game with the Giants ends up being his only action with the team, which seems likely since Brett Wisely, Christian Koss, and Tyler Fitzgerald will all be ahead of him on the depth chart, it will be a pretty forgettable Giants career but at least he got to take in some fireworks on July 4th.
