When the SF Giants made their roster shakeup earlier this week to try and get the offense going, one of the moves they made was to call up outfielder Daniel Johson from Triple-A. He has been good so far, but his stint in San Francisco may be short-lived.
The Vallejo native had a great first game with the Giants on Wednesday, collecting two hits and making a great catch in right field to help the team get a much-needed 6-5 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Vallejo native's time with SF Giants could be short-lived
He has cooled off since then as he only has one hit in eight at-bats after Wednesday's game. Johnson figures to see his playing time drop with Mike Yastrzemski coming back from a few days off and Jung Hoo Lee playing most days in center field.
When the Giants signed him last month, it seemed like he could be an interesting bench option for the team at some point. Even though his presence on the big league roster does put some more pressure on Yastrzemski, his track record in the majors does not suggest he is going to completely supplant Yastrzemski in right field.
Johnson has a career slash line of .206/.243/.333 in 39 career games. The reason the Giants have him on the big league roster is because he was hitting the ball well in Triple-A, but also because he is a solid defender.
The Giants demoted outfielder Luis Matos because he was not getting regular at-bats with the Giants. While it is tough for any player to establish a rhythm at the plate when they are not playing every day, perhaps Johnson will be better suited for infrequent play given his speed and the value he provides in the outfield.
However, if Johnson ends up struggling much like Matos did with limited playing time, the Giants may have no choice other than to try another option in the outfield. If Matos or Marco Luciano goes on a tear in Triple-A while Johnson does not do much then it would be hard to justify keeping him on the roster over them.
Given Johnson's Bay Area ties, it would be a little sad if they had to move on from him. Yet, we know that Buster Posey is not afraid to shake things up if things are going south so if he feels a move needs to be made then Johnson could end up being the odd man out on the roster.
