Unlikely former SF Giants outfielder has moment of glory in World Baseball Classic

A nice moment for the largely forgotten Giant.

The World Baseball Classic is underway. While a number of current SF Giants players are participating in the event, there are plenty of former coaches as well as former players involved as well. Eagle-eyed Giants fans were treated to a blast from the past as former Giants outfielder Stuart Fairchild hit a grand slam for Chinese Taipei.

It was a lopsided victory for Chinese Taipei over Czechia as they won 13-0, but Fairchild had a moment of glory as he ripped a grand slam in the second inning to give his team a 6-0 lead and they never looked back.

Stuart Fairchild had very brief stint with SF Giants back in 2022

Giants fans can be forgiven for not remembering Fairchild’s stint with the team. If you blinked you may have missed it. Fairchild spent five games with the Giants back in 2022 and did not have a hit in eight plate appearances so needless to say he did not have much of an impact on the Giants that year as they went 81-81 on the season.

Remembering Fairchild brings to mind the Farhan Zaidi era when seemingly every week the Giants would have a new guy like him who had been claimed off the waiver wire or was acquired in a minor trade. It was that sort of roster churn approach that drove some fans crazy even though Zaidi does deserve credit for finding the occasional diamond in the rough.

Fairchild is now a member of the Cleveland Guardians where he is trying to make the team. His career numbers are not all that impressive but he has some speed so he could potentially be a bench player.

As for how current Giants players have fared in the WBC thus far, Logan Webb looked impressive for Team USA as he delivered four solid innings against Team Brazil while only allowing one run. Luis Arráez drove in two runs for Team Venezuela and José Buttó pitched two scoreless innings. Tristan Beck had a tough outing for Team Great Britain as he gave up a home run and only recorded one out. Heliot Ramos struck out three times in three at-bats for Team Puerto Rico.

The Giants got a bit of a scare with Jung Hoo Lee as he injured his ankle while playing for Team South Korea. It is not thought to be a serious injury but it is still a bit scary to think of a Giants player getting hurt in the competition.

As long as every Giants player stays healthy it will have been a successful event from San Francisco’s point of view, but at least the event has allowed us to recall Fairchild’s not-so-memorable stint with the Giants a few years ago.
