The SF Giants made a trade with the New York Mets on Wednesday. The deal sent relief pitcher Tyler Rogers to New York in exchange for three players in what some are considering a fleecing. If it is, it will not be the first time the Giants have fleeced the Mets.
In exchange for Rogers, the Giants got pitcher Blade Tidwell, New York's No. 10 prospect, outfielder Drew Gilbert, New York's No. 12 prospect, and relief pitcher José Buttó who has a 3.64 ERA on the season with the Mets.
SF Giants have fleeced the Mets in a trade before
That is a pretty nice haul for the Giants considering the Mets will only get Rogers for the remainder of this season before he becomes a free agent in the offseason. If he pitches great and they win a World Series it will have been worth it, but if not they may regret giving up so much to get him.
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle took to social media and compared the trade to one the Giants and Mets made back in 2022 involving Darin Ruf and J.D. Davis.
The Giants sent Ruf to the Mets in exchange for Davis, Thomas Szapucki, Nick Zwack, and Carson Seymour. Ruf went on to struggle mightily with the Mets to the point where he was let go the following season and ended up signing with...you guessed it, the Giants. Talk about adding insult to injury.
The Giants got Davis who ended up being a solid player for them and recently extended his playing career in another country. Seymour recently made his MLB debut with the Giants and has looked pretty good with the Giants so far. With the team in freefall, we may get to see how he fares as a starter more the rest of the season.
If history ends up repeating itself, Rogers will struggle with the Mets and will then sign with the Giants in free agency just to enrage Mets fans even more.
One never knows how prospects will turn out, but if either of the two prospects the Giants acquired in the Rogers trade end up making an impact at the big league level in the future then it is fair to assume that the Giants will have won this trade.
If they do, maybe the Giants should start making trades with the Mets exclusively from now on because they seem to get a good deal every time.
