Turner Hill may be in trouble after latest reported SF Giants promotion

The SF Giants are reportedly set to call up outfielder Scott Bandura from Triple-A Sacramento. He has had a great season so this doesn’t come as a huge shock especially since the Giants needed to add him to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, but the move does have ramifications for guys currently on the roster.

No corresponding roster move has been announced as of yet. No matter who is the odd man out as a result of Bandura's promotion, it is clear that Turner Hill definitely has more competition to make the roster next year now.

While Hill went on a tear after being called up, his numbers have dropped recently. Over his last seven games he is hitting .111/.200/.148. Maybe that’s to be expected. He’s a rookie after all so it was inevitable he was going to come back down to earth after he was hitting .342/.428/.474 after September 1st. 

Bandura has been hot down in the minors. He has hit .320/.407/.488 with 13 home runs and 94 runs batted in. He also has 34 stolen bases so he brings speed to the table as well.

He profiles pretty similarly to Hill since they’re both left-handed bats who make a lot of contact. Bandura has more pop in his bat than Hill but he’s probably not ever going to be a 20-homer guy in the big leagues.

SF Giants have a lot of outfielders to choose from next season

It’s going to be interesting to see how the outfield competition shakes out next season. Drew Gilbert and Jonah Cox seem to have both clinched a spot on next year’s roster, but outside of them things are pretty open. Assuming Gilbert, Cox, and Jung Hoo Lee are all on the roster in 2027, that leaves two other roster spots for outfielders if the Giants don’t make any offseason additions.

That could lead to a competition between Hill, Bandura, Bo Davidson, and Victor Bericoto for those final two spots. Maybe we will see a platoon in both left field and center field next year. It would probably lead to better results than going with Heliot Ramos and Harrison Bader as the Giants did coming into 2026.

Hill could definitely still factor into the team’s plans next year, but the fact that he’s been struggling a bit while Bandura now has a chance to make a good first impression could make it harder for him to make next year’s team.
