About a month ago, there was some concern surrounding the top prospect in the SF Giants’ system. Shortstop Josuar Gonzalez reportedly had a nagging hamstring issue but the early prognosis was that it wasn’t too serious.

Finally, after nearly a month of not too many updates on the matter, Gonzalez returned to action on Friday. It’s odd that there was such mystery around his issue and why it lingered for so long, but hamstrings can notoriously take a long time to heal so the Giants were probably just being abundantly cautious with him to avoid re-injury.

Gonzalez is a guy the Giants should be careful with because he there is speculation he could be the top prospect in baseball next year. He’s a switch-hitting shortstop who seemingly has all five tools which is sure to get people excited about his potential.

Some have thrown around names like Jose Reyes and Francisco Lindor when discussing his potential so it seems like the sky is the limit for him even though he’s just 18 years old.

The Giants signed Gonzalez as an international prospect out of the Dominican Republic back in 2025. He was the No. 2 ranked international prospect after Roki Sasaki who went to the Dodgers so there was real hope that Gonzalez could develop into something special.

Giants hope they found a future star in Josuar Gonzalez

Last year he hit .288/.404/.455 with four home runs, 24 runs batted in, and 33 stolen bases in the Dominican Summer League. So far this season in the Arizona Complex League he has hit .415/.538/.634 with one homer and 11 runs driven in. He had one hit in three at-bats in his return to action on Friday.

He hasn’t been the only one turning heads in the ACL. Shortstop Luis Hernandez, signed earlier this year out of Venezuela as the top international prospect, has also been really impressive, hitting .300/.375/.592 with six homers and 27 runs batted in.

It seems like just a matter of time before the Giants promote Gonzalez and Hernandez to Single-A San Jose. They have both been impressive and could be the future of the Giants someday.

Of course, they’re both teenagers so it will be years before they potentially debut in the big leagues. Yet, it’s nice to see Gonzalez back out there after his extended absence because with the way this season has gone at the big league level for the Giants, the future can’t come fast enough.
