Top SF Giants middle infield prospect earns Northwest League Player of the Week honors, August 3-9

Jhonny Level was on a tear to start the year with the San Jose Giants, and he has continued that with the Eugene Emeralds. The top SF Giants middle infield prospect earned Northwest League Player of the Week honors last week.

The Emeralds continue to thrive in the Northwest League. With a 65-42 record, they have a comfortable hold on first place. The Tri-City Dust Devils are in second place, with a 55-53 record.

The Emeralds have already secured a spot in the Championship Series next month after clinching a first-half title. They could also clinch a second-half title. In that case, the second-place team would advance to the Championship Series to face off against Eugene.

The Giants added reinforcements to their High-A affiliate at the trade deadline. Ramon Marquez, Henry LaLane, and Marty Gair bolstered a pitching staff that was already one of the best. Middle infielder Kaeden Kent has also been assigned to the Emeralds, but he is currently on the injured list.

SF Giants prospect Jhonny Level could play a key role in Eugene’s championship run

The Giants hope that the Emeralds can bring home a title after falling short last season. This year’s roster features many of the same players that won the California League with San Jose last season.

This includes Jhonny Level, who has quickly established himself as one of the best prospects in baseball. MLB Pipeline currently has him listed as the No. 46 prospect in baseball.

The Emeralds faced off against the Spokane Indians for a six-game series. They took the series, winning four of the first five games. The sixth game was postponed due to poor air quality.

Level appeared in four games, collecting nine hits, including a double and two home runs, with eight RBI in 16 at-bats. He walked six times as well, so he was on base all the time against Spokane.

Since Level’s promotion from San Jose, he is slashing .296/.358/.490 (123 wRC+) with seven home runs, 31 RBI, and 35 runs in 229 plate appearances. This comes while being one of the youngest position players in the league.
