It has been a remarkably quiet offseason for the SF Giants so far. It is hard to make the case that the team has gotten better which is why new manager Tony Vitello has to be praying that the Giants make at least a few more moves.

Vitello is a brand new manager and while he is inheriting a roster that has some solid pieces, the Giants are not exactly setting him up for success with the offseason thus far.

New SF Giants manager Tony Vitello has to be hoping for more additions

Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle are fine pitchers, but given their injury history and inconsistency over the course of their careers, it is questionable how much they can be relied upon. Plus, there are still some holes in the lineup that must be addressed.

Here are three players Vitello must be hoping the Giants sign.

Max Scherzer

Basically ever since Vitello was officially made the manager of the Giants, Scherzer has been tied to the team. He and Vitello have a history dating back to the University of Missouri where Scherzer was a player and Vitello an assistant coach.

Scherzer is now in his 40's and is not the pitcher he once was, but he proved last postseason with the Toronto Blue Jays that he still has something left in the tank.

While it would make sense on some level, the Giants now have five starters which makes a reunion between the two sides feel exceedingly unlikely.

Cody Bellinger

This one may be a little less realistic, but Vitello would certainly love to be able to slot a former MVP into his lineup on Opening Day. Bellinger has been tied to the Giants but he has also drawn interest from a lot of other teams.

It would be a surprise if he ended up with San Francisco, but maybe Vitello is not quite fully acquainted with the team's usual inability to land big free agents.

Dominic Smith

Vitello likely did not see Dominic Smith play much in 2025, but Giants fans know just how valuable he was to have on the team. His smooth defense at first base and solid contributions at the plate made him a pleasant surprise to have on the team.

He wouldn't be a perfect fit given Rafael Devers figures to see a lot of time at first base and top prospect Bryce Eldridge could also factor into the picture, but if the team wants to give Eldridge more time to develop then bringing back Smith could save Vitello some headaches.

The Giants do not seem to be in a spending mood, but Vitello has to be hoping he gets a few more solid players before the start of the regular season.
