On Saturday morning, the SF Giants pulled off a surprising trade by shipping Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians. To take his place on the roster, the Giants are calling up multi-positional catcher Logan Porter, per Ari Alexander of 7News Boston WHDH.

Daniel Susac has begun a rehab assignment, but the Giants remain committed to giving him a couple of days to get his timing back. That said, the early returns look promising given that he had a huge day at the plate in his first rehab game.

In the meantime, Porter, along with Eric Haase and Jesús Rodríguez, will share the catching duties. There are a lot of multi-positional catchers in that mix, and not many options that can reliably handle the duties behind the plate.

Porter re-signed with the Giants on a minor league deal in the offseason. This included a camp invite. There is rarely continuity for players on minor league deals, but this marked the third straight season in which Porter has played for the organization.

While Porter received a camp invite, the odds of him making the club were low. Susac and Haase competed for the backup catcher role, with the former winning that competition. The dynamic at that position has shifted considerably since spring training. The expectation is that Susac will take over as the everyday backstop when he returns.

Porter has put up a .520 OPS in 42 plate appearances this season with the Sacramento River Cats. He had shared the catching duties with Haase and Rodríguez in Sacramento. Now, he is sharing those same duties with them on the major league roster.

The 30-year-old backstop appeared briefly for the club last year. Bailey was on the injured list, and they cycled through Sam Huff as an option, leaving them thin behind the plate. Porter tallied just one hit in seven at-bats while appearing in four games.

Overall, the right-handed bat has posted a .616 OPS in 47 career plate appearances in the majors. The Giants already have a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so no corresponding move is needed to add Porter.
