The obvious candidate for SF Giants manager that no one is talking about

He would be a strong hire.

The SF Giants decided to fire manager Bob Melvin after two middling seasons. The team will be linked to a lot of managerial candidates, but one candidate should not get lost in the shuffle: former Giants bench coach Ron Wotus.

Sure, Bruce Bochy and others may get the headlines, but Wotus would not be a bad option for the team. He was a coach with the Giants from 1998 to 2021 and served under several managers, including as Bochy's bench coach.

SF Giants have obvious managerial candidate in Ron Wotus

If Bochy decides that he wants to retire and does not want to continue managing, then Wotus seems like a solid hire especially if president of baseball operations Buster Posey is looking for more of a seasoned baseball hand rather than someone who is fairly green.

Wotus may not have any managerial experience, but he is as experienced as anyone could be for the role without having managed a big league club before. He was a third base coach for the Giants and a bench coach, watching managers like Dusty Baker, Felipe Alou, and Bochy run the team.

He interviewed for the manager role after Bochy stepped down in 2019 but was passed over for Gabe Kapler. He stayed with the team for a few more seasons but retired after the 2021 season.

He never got his shot at a manger role, but maybe he makes sense for the team right now.

As a respected baseball guy with deep ties to the Giants, he obviously has a close relationship with Posey having coached him for all of those years. The last few years he has served as an analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area so he has remained around the Giants even after retirement.

Posey says he wants someone who is obsessed over the details. Wotus would often align San Francisco's defense in the infield and work on defensive shifts which obviously requires a great attention to detail. With the sloppy defensive mistakes the Giants made at times this year, Wotus could make sense as a guy who would clean up the mistakes and produce a cleaner brand of baseball.

The Giants will probably be connected to a lot of people in this search. It will take time to find the right fit, but the Giants should not forget about Wotus as he would bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and respect to the clubhouse even if he is easy to overlook.
