Did the SF Giants make the right decisions last offseason to improve the team going into 2025? Now that the season is over, let's look back and see if Buster Posey made the right moves or wrong moves last offseason.
Posey provided lots of value for SF Giants from 2024 to 2025
Subtractions: 10 players, 6.2 bWAR (2024)
The Giants subtracted 10 players last offseason. Those ten players had combined for 6.2 bWAR in 2024, led by starting pitcher Blake Snell (2.1 bWAR) and veteran outfielder Michael Conforto (1.3 bWAR).
Two other departing players, Taylor Rogers and Jorge Soler, were worth more than one win for the Giants in 2024.
How they fared: 9 players, -0.9 bWAR (2025)
Among the ten departing former Giants, nine of them played in the MLB in 2025 (Curt Casali did not). Of those nine, eight of them got worse, from a bWAR perspective. Six of the nine were actually worth negative value, with Mark Canha (-1 bWAR) leading the way as the worst former Giant in 2025. Conforto (-0.7), Soler (-0.5), and Trenton Brooks (-0.5) also struggled in 2025, although Conforto still found a way to torture the Giants.
Snell and Rogers were at least in the positive, but both still got worse. Snell was the best former Giant, but still only managed 1.3 bWAR, while Rogers finished at 0.4 bWAR.
Austin Warren was the only former Giants who improved from his 2024 total. He was worth 0.4 bWAR, slightly better than the 0.3 bWAR he put up in San Francisco.
Additions: 8 players, 1.8 bWAR (2024)
The Giants brought in eight players who had combined for just 1.8 bWAR last offseason. Remove Willy Adames, who had been worth 3.1 bWAR with the Brewers, and that number falls into the negatives. Among the players they brought in, San Francisco took gambles that guys like Dominic Smith (-0.1), Andrew Knizner (-0.9), and Justin Verlander (-0.3) would bounce back in 2025.
How they fared: 8 players, 5.7 bWAR (2025)
The guys San Francisco brought in combined for 5.7 bWAR in 2025, significantly more than the guys they got rid of. That's great news. Additionally, six of the eight additions improved from their 2024 totals. That included Verlander, who improved to 1.2 bWAR (a 1.5 win improvement). Adames led the way as their best addition, worth 3.6 bWAR.
Final Verdict:
The Giants did get better last offseason, adding a solid group of players that mostly improved from their 2024 showings, and casting aside a group of declining players. If Buster Posey can keep this up for future offseasons after figuring out the next manager of the team, the Giants will be a better team because of it.
