The Los Angeles Dodgers designated 2023 NL All-Star Alexis Díaz for assignment earlier this week. Should the SF Giants take a flyer on Díaz to bolster their bullpen?
Should the SF Giants take a flyer on a 2023 NL All-Star from the Dodgers?
In the first few months of the season, the SF Giants had the best bullpen in all of baseball. On July 15th, they held the best ERA across all Major League bullpens with a 3.14 ERA. They also had the top three individual reliever ERAs in baseball with Randy Rodríguez, Tyler Rogers, and Erik Miller, at on point. That bullpen looks a lot different now, as Rogers was traded, whereas Rodríguez and Miller are on the injured list.
They currently have the second-best ERA in baseball with a 3.34 ERA as a group, but if you go by fWAR, they drop down to the twelfth best in baseball, with 4.0 fWAR.
It's clear that with them trading names like Rogers and Camilo Doval, and others getting injured such as Erik Miller or Randy Rodriguez, that this group needs some reinforcements. Did one just become available?
On September 4, news broke that the Los Angeles Dodgers designated Alexis Díaz for assignment. At a quick glimpse, the righty has struggled this season, between Cincinnati and Los Angeles. He has a 7.80 ERA in 15.0 innings, and the expected ERA isn't much better at a 7.25.
However, just last season, Díaz was an effective reliever. As a matter of fact, he has been one of the better relievers in baseball for a few years.
ERA | IP | K/9 | BB/9 | |
---|---|---|---|---|
2022 | 1.84 | 63.2 | 11.73 | 4.66 |
2023 | 3.07 | 67.1 | 11.50 | 4.81 |
2024 | 3.99 | 56.1 | 8.79 | 4.95 |
Díaz has shown the ability to be an elite arm out of the pen. His 2022 season was his best, but he was still striking out an absurd number of batters in 2023. Now, the walk numbers aren't great, and he's seen some serious regression in terms of his strikeout numbers across the last two seasons.
However, the Giants could bring him in and hope that all he needed was a change of scenery. At the end of the day, Oracle Park is one of the best ballparks for pitchers, and one of Díaz's biggest issues has been allowing the long ball this season.
For a team who's bullpen has taken a beating like the Giants, it might not hurt to bring him in and give him a shot.
