Should SF Giants take a chance on veteran pitcher recently released by Yankees?

He would add one more reliable arm to the rotation.

The SF Giants have dealt with some injuries and poor performance in their starting rotation as of late. With the New York Yankees recently releasing veteran pitcher Marcus Stroman, would it make any sort of sense for the Giants to sign him?

Stroman has struggled mightily this season. In nine starts with New York he had a 6.23 ERA in 39 innings. He struck out just 26 batters compared to 16 walks issued. His most recent start was not pretty, and the Giants embarrassed him at Yankee Stadium back in April.

With how bad he has looked this season, it is fair to wonder why the Giants would even entertain bringing Stroman in. Yet, with the current state of San Francisco's starting rotation, it would not be the craziest thing to give him a couple of starts.

Landen Roupp is currently on the IL and the hope is he will be back soon, but if he has any sort of setback as he recovers from his elbow injury, that could leave the rotation in a tough spot.

Kai-Wei Teng has had to fill in with Roupp on the mend. If the Giants are serious about contending the rest of this year, Stroman would certainly be an upgrade over Teng or probably any of the other minor-league options the Giants have.

If Roupp comes back to the rotation soon and is healthy, though, that leaves the rotation in a better spot. That would mean Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Justin Verlander, Roupp, and the young Carson Whisenhunt would comprise the rotation.

Signing Stroman to replace Whisenhunt in the rotation would be a mistake as the young lefty should get a long look from the Giants for the rest of this season.

The Giants are in a bit of a weird spot where they have a chance to contend if they get hot, but they also are looking ahead to 2026 a little bit after selling off key pieces at the trade deadline.

If they were all-in to win, signing Stroman would seem like more of a reasonable gamble to see if the two-time All-Star still had anything left in the tank. As things stand, the Giants are probably better served relying on their younger arms the rest of this season to see what they have going into next season.
