The SF Giants need to improve their pitching staff this offseason. The New York Yankees could use an upgrade either at second or third base and have a surplus of starters. It seems like the two sides could help each other out if San Francisco is willing to deal Casey Schmitt.
I’ve written about how the Seattle Mariners could also make sense as a trade partner for the Giants given they have some starting pitchers they’re reportedly open to dealing and are also in need of more offense. Schmitt could make sense for them too but the Yankees also have some interesting starters for San Francisco to peruse.
The Yankees are likely going to let second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. walk in free agency and Ryan McMahon has not been cutting it at third base so they could hypothetically plug Schmitt into one of those spots since he has experience at both and his best position is third which he’s blocked at with San Francisco due to Matt Chapman.
What would the Giants potentially get in return though in this hypothetical deal? Well, in an ideal world they could get their pick of Ryan Weathers, Will Warren, and Clarke Schmidt.
Weathers is a 27-year-old lefty who had a 3.60 ERA in 25 starts last season. He struck out 143 batters and walked 38 in 137 innings pitched. Warren had a 3.92 ERA in 156 innings and the 27-year-old struck out 158 batters while walking 54. Schmidt is a bit older at 30 and he had a 3.07 collective ERA if you combine the 30 starts he made across 2024 and 2025 but he missed practically all of 2026 due to injury and will be a free agent after the 2027 season while Weathers and Warren won’t hit free agency until after the 2028 and 2030 season respectively.
Giants would create a hole in the lineup by trading Casey Schmitt
Warren may be the best option of the bunch just since he is under team control for the longest. Schmitt won’t be a free agent until after the 2029 season and is entering his first offseason of arbitration-eligibility so a straight-up swap of Warren for Schmitt could make sense for both sides.
Of course, the Giants would then have to figure things out at second base and in left field for next season. They could just roll with a platoon of Bo Davidson and Victor Bericoto in left and throw Marcelo Mayer out there at second but they could also explore options in free agency.
There’s no guarantee the Giants will even entertain trading Schmitt given he’s coming off a really strong season, but they may decide adding pitching is important enough to subtract from the lineup so don’t be shocked if the Giants and Yankees end up striking a deal even though Brian Cashman may be wary of Buster Posey after he sent him Camilo Doval and Heliot Ramos who both struggled in pinstripes.
