SF Giants can make push for Mariners trade candidate Logan Gilbert, but it will hurt

It's not even October yet, but for the SF Giants it is not too early to be thinking about the offseason. It is going to be an abnormal offseason with the looming lockout, but the Giants should still be very active especially on the trade market.

Mark Feinsand of MLB took a look at 11 potential trade candidates who could be on the move this offseason, and one of them is Seattle Mariners ace Logan Gilbert. The Giants could certainly make a run at him, but the price would be pretty steep.

The 29-year-old has been one of the more consistent pitchers in baseball in recent years and has been a key member of a Mariners rotation that is among the strongest in the game. Feinsand notes that the Mariners and Gilbert do not seem likely to agree on a contract extension and Gilbert is set to be a free agent after the 2027 season so Seattle may decide to try to get something for him rather than see him walk in free agency.

Since 2022, Gilbert has a 3.46 ERA in 151 starts and 888 innings pitched. He has made 24 or more starts in every season he has pitched in the big leagues so he is a reliable work horse who made the American League All-Star team in 2024.

After the Giants landed Robbie Ray from the Mariners to get Logan Webb a solid No. 2 in the rotation a few years ago, it seems only fitting if the Giants go back to that same well in the Pacific Northwest to see if they can land themselves another solid starter.

Trading for Gilbert would be risky though. Since he is only under contract through next season, there's a chance trading for him could be something of a waste if the 2027 season ends up being shortened due to the lockout. The only way it would make sense is if the Giants signed him to an extension after trading for him, but we are all well aware of the team's reluctance to give out big contracts to starting pitchers.

Giants may have to part with Casey Schmitt to get Logan Gilbert

The Giants would probably have to give up a good player to get Gilbert. Maybe a one-for-one Casey Schmitt-for-Gilbert trade would work since the Mariners desperately need offense and Schmitt proved he can be a potent force on offense before he went down with an injury. He had 21 homers in just 98 games played.

That would be a pretty steep price to pay since Schmitt looks like he could be San Francisco's second baseman of the future and won't hit free agency for a few more years, but that may be what it takes to land an arm like Gilbert.

Outside of Webb, the rotation is a big question mark going into 2027 so the Giants need to make some moves to ensure they have a better rotation than they entered 2026 with.
