World Baseball Classic rosters are officially being set and the SF Giants have a number of representatives on the various teams in the competition. Some we have known for a while and others were a bit more of a surprise.
The full list of players can be viewed here and it includes Logan Webb who will pitch for Team USA, Heliot Ramos who will represent Puerto Rico, Tristan Beck who will represent Great Britain, José Buttó will represent Venezuela, Reiver Sanmartín will represent Colombia, Jung Hoo Lee will represent South Korea, and Harrison Bader will represent Israel.
SF Giants list of WBC participants includes some surprises
We knew about Webb, Beck, Lee, and Ramos for some time, but the other names like Sanmartín and Bader were not previously reported on.
Justice delos Santos of the San Jose Mercury News also noted on social media that Luis Arraez will represent Venezuela but he was not part of San Francisco's initial announcement because his signing is not official yet.
It will be interesting to see how the World Baseball Classic impacts the Giants especially since the event takes place right in the middle of spring training. There is always the fear that guys could get hurt or pitchers could fall out of their usual routine as they are having to pitch high-intensity innings in March which is unusual for them.
The timing is also a bit weird for the Giants since new manager Tony Vitello is going to be fresh on the scene and trying to establish a culture in Scottsdale. That effort may be made harder with some of the most important players on the team competing in the WBC and being out of camp for a little bit.
But a case could be made that the Giants will benefit from the WBC. The Giants have not been to the playoffs since 2021 and a lot of guys on the team have not felt that October intensity in quite a while. Giving a taste of that sort of environment to a younger player like Lee or Ramos could help them manage the nerves that come with playing in the playoffs if the Giants are able to make it to the postseason in 2026.
Fingers crossed no one gets hurt and that Webb does not get messed up by deviating from his usual routine, but overall it will be cool to see some Giants players compete in such a unique event.
