SF Giants' underwhelming September call-ups miss an obvious opportunity

September is here which means MLB rosters expand from 26 to 28. While we took a look at who the SF Giants might call up recently, they opted to go the conservative route by promoting catcher Zach Morgan and left-handed pitcher Cesar Perdomo from Triple-A Sacramento. Adrian Houser was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster.

These are practical moves because the Giants could use another catcher to take a little bit of the burden off Drew Cavanaugh and Andrew Knizner. They’re already without both Daniel Susac and Jesus Rodriguez due to injury so they’d be wise to give those guys a bit more of a break down the stretch.

Perdomo makes sense especially with the recent news on Sam Hentges and Matt Gage who are both likely done for the season. The Giants could use another lefty in the bullpen alongside Reiver Sanmartin so it’s an understandable move.

Still, Giants fans who have been following whats been going on in the minors had to have been hoping the team would call up outfielder Bo Davidson. The young slugger has been on a heater in Triple-A Sacramento as of late and on the season between Double-A and Triple-A he’s hitting .281/.352/.513 with 26 home runs and 85 runs batted in.

He’s got a ton of pop in his bat and just recently hit a go-ahead three-run homer for the River Cats so it seemed like the perfect time to call him up while he’s doing impressive things down in Triple-A.

Plus, the Giants need to add him to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft so they might as well get a look at him because they certainly don’t want another team to swoop in and poach him.

The Giants do already have a lot of outfielders on the big league roster. They currently have Jung Hoo Lee, Drew Gilbert, Turner Hill, Jonah Cox, and Grant McCray on the roster. The Giants could have DFA’d McCray who has not taken advantage of his opportunities, but with Hill playing well he figures to get a lot of at-bats the rest of the season.

Maybe Davidson will get called up soon if the team sustains another injury or if he simply forces their hand, but it is a little bit of a disappointment to not see him get called up.

Practicality is understandable just so the Giants can get through this brutal, injury-plagued season. Yet, a season like this is a perfect time to give some young prospects a chance to make their big league debut so it feels like a missed opportunity for San Francisco's front office.
