SF Giants unable to sign 2 of their 21 2026 MLB draft picks

The MLB 2026 draft is officially in the rearview mirror. The SF Giants announced their draft class ahead of Monday's deadline, confirming that they were unable to sign Mikey Bell and JP Robertson.

The Giants also announced a handful of undrafted signings. Pitcher Toran O'Harran out of Stanford University headlined that group of players.

The Giants leaned heavily on pitchers to start the draft. Jackson Flora, Carson Bolemon, and Kaden Waechter represented the club's first three picks. They went with some high-upside picks later in the draft. This included Josiah Kemp in the 12th round, followed by Dalton Wentz in the 16th round.

Both players had the leverage to return to school, and that helped them land sizable signing bonuses. In fact, Wentz was the last player from their draft class to sign, and his signing bonus was comparable to a late, fourth-round pick.

By the end, the Giants had spent every dollar they had available on this year's draft. They started with a bonus pool of $17.3 million and spent exactly five percent above that amount. They will be taxed on the overage.

Unfortunately, they did not have enough bonus pool space to sign Mikey Bell and JP Robertson. Presumably, both were seeking a bonus of more than $150,000. That was the maximum amount that the Giants could offer after the Wentz signing.

Bell was selected in the 19th round, followed by Robertson in the 20th round. Bell announced last week that he would be returning to school. He spent his 2026 season at Gonzaga University but has since transferred to the University of Georgia. Bell posted a 1.059 OPS with nine home runs and 47 RBI in 262 plate appearances this season.

On the other hand, there was little more radio silence from Robertson. When the Giants selected him earlier this month, he offered an intriguing pitch mix, including a mid 90's fastball with an upper 80's cutter and a low 80's sweeper. At times, he can get the fastball up to 100 MPH.

The right-handed pitcher posted a 4.34 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 21 walks in 37.1 innings for the University of Mississippi in 2026. Bell and Robertson will be eligible for the draft again next year.
