SF Giants stud third baseman nominated for Silver Slugger Award
Just more evidence that Matt Chapman had a great 2024.
It is no secret that SF Giants third baseman Matt Chapman had a great 2024 season. He won his 5th Gold Glove Award on Sunday and on Monday he was nominated for a Silver Slugger Award for National League third basemen.
The award is meant to recognize the best offensive player at each position in both the American League and National League. The winners are voted on by managers and coaches who are not allowed to vote for players on their own team
The other two NL third basemen nominated are Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres and Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Chapman had a very solid offensive year with the Giants. He hit .247/.328/.463 with 27 home runs and 78 RBI in 575 at-bats. It was arguably his best offensive season since his 2019 All-Star campaign with the Oakland A's.

The favorite for the award at third base in the NL is probably Machado. He hit .275/.325/.472 with 29 home runs and 105 RBI. Bohm also had a solid year, hitting .280/.332/.448 with 15 home runs and 97 RBI.
Even if Chapman does not win, the fact that he was nominated speaks volumes about the year he had and the way he is viewed by the rest of the league. He really is a complete player when you account for his stellar defense as well as his underrated speed. It is easy to forget he stole 15 bases in 2024.
The Giants were wise to lock Chapman up to a 6-year, $151 million contract extension at the end of the season. He is clearly a leader on the team and he is the type of guy that other players want to play alongside. You know there are plenty of pitchers who would love to have Chapman playing behind them and his strong offensive year in 2024 can help him convince other offensive players to come to San Francisco.
Chapman is a great piece for the Giants to build around. He brings a ton of value on both sides of the ball and is a definite leader on the team. He already added some gold to his collection this season, so why not add a little silver as well?
