SF Giants baseball is about to return. The Giants play their first Cactus League game on Saturday, February 22nd. Let's take a look at the team's schedule and also take a look at which games will be available to watch on television.
Beginning with the schedule, the full list of games the Giants will play in the Cactus League can be viewed here. The Giants kick things off against Bruce Bochy and the Texas Rangers on the 22nd and will play a total of 31 games including split squad games.
SF Giants spring training schedule and how to watch on TV
Some notable games on the schedule include the game on Saturday, March 1st against the Los Angeles Dodgers which will be on the road at LA's Camelback Ranch ballpark. The Giants finish up the Cactus League on March 22nd against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Scottsdale Stadium, San Francisco's home away from home during spring training. Perhaps Corbin Burnes, who the Giants missed out on in free agency, will get a final tune up before the regular season in during that game.
After Cactus League play concludes, there will be three more exhibition games the Giants play before Opening Day in Cincinnati. The first one is a game against the Sacramento Rivers Cats on March 23rd at the Sutter Health Park, the home park of the River Cats which they will have to share with the No-Name Athletics for the 2025 season.
The next two are games against the Detroit Tigers at Oracle Park. The Tigers will be there because they open their season in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, so it makes sense for them to get acclimated to the cool California climate prior to taking on the defending champs.
Unfortunately, there will not be a ton of opportunities to watch the Giants on TV in spring training this season, at least with NBC Sports Bay Area. According to the MLB website, five exhibition games will be carried by NBC Sports Bay Area. This includes a March 8th game against the Kansas City Royals as well as two games against the Athletics on the 11th and 16th of March. The two exhibition games against Detroit prior to Opening Day will also be televised. The San Francisco Chronicle notes that MLB Network should carry some Giants games, although they may be the away team's broadcasting crew.
Sadly, due to health reasons, fan-favorite broadcaster Mike Krukow will not call any Cactus League games. Those games will be called by Duane Kuiper and either Hunter Pence or Javier Lopez. However, Krukow will be able to call those two exhibition games against Detroit since they are in San Francisco.
15 games will be carried over the radio waves by KNBR and the other 13 will be available as an audiocast on sfgiants.com. So you should be able to either listen to or watch every game, but unfortunately not every game will be on TV.
No matter what, it is just exciting to have baseball back soon. Cactus League baseball cannot get started soon enough as far as I'm concerned.
