The Pittsburgh Pirates are seeking bullpen help and are willing to trade their compensatory pick, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The SF Giants have already made one such move this season. Why not go all in on this year's draft by acquiring another pick?
The Pirates' No. 34 pick is a compensatory pick, which is the only type of pick that can be traded in baseball. That selection carries a slot value of $2.9 million.
The Giants bolstered their bonus pool when they shipped Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians last month. They acquired the No. 29 pick in the deal, along with the $3.3 million corresponding slot value. This move gave them three picks within the first 55 selections. This includes the No. 4 overall pick.
The Giants have struggled to hit in the first round for the better part of the past 15 years. Of course, Bryce Eldridge looks to be a pleasant exception to that list. They lucked into a top pick in this year's draft, and they need to hit on it.
Why the SF Giants should want to add another pick
That said, the Giants could improve their odds of finding talent by adding another pick. This would not be as a means to float star UCLA infielder Roch Cholowsky to the No. 4 pick, but as a means to have another top pick and the bonus pool to get creative.
It was a different time, but the Giants held six first-round picks in 2007. They used that first pick to land Madison Bumgarner. They also eventually traded a couple of players from those picks in Tim Alderson and Charlie Culberson to acquire Freddy Sánchez and Marco Scutaro, respectively. That draft played a pivotal role in the club's championship run.
What would the Pirates want in return? The Giants do not have much in the way of bullpen help. In fact, that unit has a 4.24 ERA, which is 17th in baseball. They have been even worse this month, posting a 5.98 ERA.
While the Giants do not have much to offer other teams in terms of bullpen help, it bears mentioning that compensatory picks do not hold a ton of trade value in trade talks. Moving one of Erik Miller or Keaton Winn might be just enough to get it done.
