The SF Giants announced on Tuesday that Kai-Wei Teng will start Wednesday's game against the San Diego Padres and Landen Roupp will come off the IL to start on Friday. The team also demoted Carson Whisenhunt to Triple-A.
This means the team's rotation is going to have a bit of a different look going forward. They had to patch things together with openers at times as of late with Roupp on the IL and Hayden Birdsong being demoted, but at least for now they will be back to having a five-man rotation.
SF Giants have a five-man rotation yet again after latest roster moves
Roupp had a rehab start recently that went well, so it is good to get him back. He was having a phenomenal year before he had to go on the IL with an elbow injury. In 20 starts on the season, he has a 3.11 ERA.
With Roupp expected to be activated from the IL on Friday, the Giants will have to make a corresponding move so we will have to see who gets demoted to Triple-A.
Teng will take the ball later today and he looked phenomenal in his last outing against the Washington Nationals. After Matt Gage opened the game, Teng came in and pitched five scoreless innings to earn his first MLB win.
He looked much better than he did earlier in August when he started a game against the New York Mets and gave up five earned runs in 3 and 1/3 innings pitched.
After Whisenhunt's demotion, Teng now has an opportunity to grab hold of a rotation spot for the rest of the season. Now is his chance to prove to the team that he could be a part of their plans for 2026.
We will see if this current rotation remains consistent for the rest of the season. If they are healthy, Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Justin Verlander, and Roupp all seem like locks to remain in the rotation the rest of the year. That fifth spot could serve as a sort of open audition spot for young pitchers to prove their worth.
It is nice to see young guys get their opportunity, and in a season that seems to be lost the Giants cannot really do anything except look to the future and give their younger players opportunities.
