SF Giants reportedly set to promote recently-acquired pitching prospect to Double-A

The season is over for the Eugene Emeralds, but it will continue for one SF Giants pitching prospect. According to Chase Ford of MiLB Central, Henry Lalane is moving up to Double-A.

The Giants acquired Lalane, along with Kaeden Kent, in the deal that sent Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees. Kent's inclusion was a headline grabber, as he is the son of Hall of Fame second baseman Jeff Kent, but Lalane was also in the midst of a good season.

Lalane signed with the Yankees during the 2021 international signing period. He earned a $350,000 signing bonus.

Since then, it has been a deliberate ascent up the minor league ladder. The lefty pitcher did not reach full-season ball until 2024 and had not pitched above Low-A until this season.

With the Yankees' Low-A affiliate, Lalane had pitched to a 2.74 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 11.7 K/9, and a 3.68 SO/W rate across 62.1 innings. He earned a mid-season promotion to High-A, but only made three starts before being traded.

Lalane was not able to sustain the momentum following the deal. He posted a 5.82 ERA in five starts for Eugene. In fairness, some of his late-season struggles can be attributed to fatigue, as he had never pitched more than 50 innings in a pro season before this year. He has reached nearly 100 innings this year.

On the mound, Lalane throws from a high three-quarters arm slot from the left side. He gets well above-average extension from his 6-foot-7 frame. Lalane throws a mid 90's fastball that gets plenty of late carry and run through the zone. He mixes that with a low 80's changeup and a low 80's sweeper.

The fastball and changeup have enough velocity separation for the changeup to be effective, and it fades nicely as it reaches the plate. The sweeper is used more against left-handed hitters, and it has been effective in those matchups. Lalane might need another option against right-handed hitters, but for now, it is mostly his fastball-changeup mix.

The southpaw pitcher is joining a Richmond Flying Squirrels club that is gearing up for a postseason run. They clinched a playoff spot after securing a first-half title, but the roster is much different now compared to the one earlier in the year. They will now get a reinforcement in LaLane.
