SF Giants land Jeff Kent's son and potential front-line starter in Heliot Ramos trade with Yankees

The SF Giants have made another trade on a very active Monday. This one sends outfielder Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees and the initial reporting is that the return will include left-handed pitching prospect Henry LaLane and second baseman Kaeden Kent who indeed is the son of Jeff Kent. I wrote about it so much that the Giants made it happen! 

LaLane is being developed as a starter in the minors right now, and while his size and fastball velocity suggest he could be turned into a reliever, he has pitched well enough as a starter that that will likely continue to be his path.

The Giants clearly sought to load up on pitching at the trade deadline this year. They already added a bunch of young arms in the 2026 MLB Draft but the main prospects in each of their deadline deals was a pitcher which makes sense.

The farm system has leaned heavily towards position player talent at least at the top so it seems the Giants are trying to balance that out with all of these moves.

LaLane is 6-foot-7 and is 22 years old. In the minors this season he has a 2.77 ERA in 78 innings pitched. He has 98 strikeouts compared to 26 walks so his stuff is pretty electric and it’s not hard to see it playing in the big leagues someday. He is ranked No. 5 in New York's system according to MLB Pipeline.

The addition of Kent to the deal just makes too much sense. Anyone who has been reading my articles for the last month or two knows that basically any mock trade I’ve had between the Giants and Yankees has included Kent so this just seemed like a slam dunk.

He’s a solid player too as he is hitting .302/.359/.433 in the minors this season and was ranked as the No. 13 prospect in New York's system. After the Giants drafted Peyton Bonds, the nephew of Barry Bonds, last month there is now a chance that a Bonds and Kent will be in the lineup once again in San Francisco.

This seems like a very good trade for the Giants both for nostalgia purposes and for very material purposes. The Giants get a guy who has the stuff to turn into an elite starter in LaLane and potentially even their second baseman of the future in Kent. They had to give up a solid player in Ramos to get it done but the reward could be great.
