SF Giants can make Jeff Kent's Hall of Fame coronation even cooler at the trade deadline

Former SF Giants second baseman Jeff Kent is going to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame today. It’s a very cool and deserved honor for Kent who had a great career, and it’s made even more special by the fact that he is going to be enshrined in the Hall as a Giant.

He’s the first player to enter the Hall of Fame as a Giant since Orlando Cepeda in 1999 so it’s a big deal even if there’s a decent chance the Giants could get a few more Giants inducted next year with Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, and Buster Posey all on the ballot.

The Giants will celebrate Kent at Oracle Park a little over a month from now on August 29 when Kent’s No. 21 will be officially retired by the organization and Hall of Fame replica rings will be handed out to the first 21,000 fans.

It’s nice that Kent is getting his flowers especially after he fell out of favor with the Giants at least briefly when he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants have a chance to make Kent’s coronation even cooler though at the MLB trade deadline.

Giants can trade for Kent's son iin the next week

Kent’s son Kaeden is currently in the New York Yankees organization after they drafted him in the third round last year. The 22-year-old second baseman is currently with New York’s High-A affiliate and is ranked as the No. 14 prospect in New York’s system. He’s hitting .302/.359/.433 on the season with six home runs, 43 runs batted in, and 20 stolen bases.

The Yankees make sense as a natural trade partner for the Giants in the next week. New York could use an outfielder like Heliot Ramos or Jung Hoo Lee with Aaron Judge still injured and they could also use Luis Arraez to give their lineup a boost.

If the Giants do swing a trade with the Yankees they should try to get a package that includes Kent in the return. The opportunity is just too good to pass up especially since the Giants just drafted Peyton Bonds, the nephew of Barry Bonds, earlier this month in the MLB Draft. Given how Barry and Jeff had their ups and downs as teammates, it would be an interesting experiment to see how the next generation fared playing together.

The Giants do already have a lot of middle infielders in their farm system, but Gavin Kilen was just promoted to Double-A Richmond so there could be a spot for Kent at second base with the High-A Eugene Emeralds.

San Francisco obviously shouldn’t just do a one-for-one Arraez in exchange for Kent kind of trade or anything like that, but if Kent could be included in a package that also had two or three other players it would constitute a pretty nice haul similar to the one the Giants got in exchange for Camilo Doval last year.

Kent is getting a very well-deserved honor and if the Giants were to trade for his son that would make it even more special that Kent is being enshrined forever in Cooperstown as a Giant.
