SF Giants promote one of their top pitching prospects to Double-A

The SF Giants have seen enough from Jacob Bresnahan at High-A. On Thursday, they promoted the 21-year-old pitcher to Double-A to finish out the year, per a team announcement.

The Giants also moved Charlie Szykowny up to Triple-A. The left-handed bat was a ninth-round pick in the 2023 draft out of the University of Illinois at Chicago. One year later, the Giants took his college teammate, Zane Zielinski, in the same round. For the past couple of years, Szykowny and Zielinski played in the same infield together.

In 2025, Szykowny had a modest breakout season, posting an .816 OPS in 549 plate appearances with the Eugene Emeralds. His 21 home runs were third among Giants minor leaguers.

This year, Szykowny recorded a .733 OPS with 14 home runs and 53 RBI in 482 plate appearances with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He offers some of the best mix of contact and power in the organization.

SF Giants pitching prospect has gotten better as the season has progressed

On the other hand, Jacob Bresnahan earned a late-season promotion. He was acquired, along with Nate Furman, in a 2024 trade that sent Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians.

Since then, the southpaw pitching prospect has established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the organization. Before the draft and trade deadline, there was a strong case to make that he was the club's top pitching prospect.

The Giants added a handful of pitching prospects in the draft, headlined by Jackson Flora. They also added Ramon Marquez in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. Flora is viewed as the top pitching prospect, but there is a spirited debate after that.

Bresnahan earned California League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2025. He moved up to High-A this year and recorded a 2.92 ERA with 118 strikeouts and 38 walks in 98.2 innings for Eugene. He has been even better than that lately, posting a 2.28 ERA in 51.1 frames since July 1.

On the mound, Bresnahan throws from a three-quarters arm slot. He gets above-average extension, so the ball gets in on hitters quickly. He flashes a low-to-mid 90’s fastball that rides up in the zone effectively. He mixes in a mid 80’s changeup and low 80’s sweeping slider, with the former being his go-to secondary.

Bresnahan will become one of the youngest pitchers to appear in a game in the Eastern League in 2026.
