Spring training is officially over for the SF Giants. They head back to California to take on their Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, for an exhibition game. Landen Roupp will face off against Keaton Winn.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Sacramento River Cats, March 23
Roupp is coming off a solid rookie campaign in which he registered a 3.58 ERA across 50.1 frames with San Francisco. He finished the year in the rotation, posting a 3.18 ERA in his final five appearances of the year.
Given his strong finish, Roupp was among the candidates for the final rotation spot and he has done everything he can do to win that camp battle. He allowed five earned runs with 14 strikeouts and one walk in 12 innings of work this spring. This does not include an outing in minor league camp where he tallied 13 strikeouts.
The right-handed hurler relied primarily on a sinker-curveball combination. He gets some swinging strikes with his curveball, both in the strike zone and as a chase pitch. Roupp uses the sinker effectively to keep the ball on the ground, leading to him inducing a ground ball in 47.2 percent of batted-ball events. Plus, he mixed in a changeup a little more regularly, especially against left-handed hitters.
Who is hot for the SF Giants?
The Giants pulled up Sabin Ceballos from minor league camp when they needed an extra player and he took full advantage of the opportunity. In 15 at-bats, he recorded nine hits with two doubles, one home run, and seven RBI. This included a bases clearing double against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the bottom of the ninth innings in Saturday's game.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
Kyle Harrison was originally slated to start today's game for Sacramento, but he was scratched. Keaton Winn will take his place on the hill. Winn has already been optioned after allowed three earned runs with 10 strikeouts and two walks in five innings this spring. The right-handed hurler will feature a mid-90's fastball that has two different looks with a splitter and occasional slider.
