The SF Giants (4-3) are taking on the Los Angeles Angels (5-3) on the first Sunday in March of the Cactus League. Veteran hurler Robbie Ray will be taking the hill in his second start of the spring.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Los Angeles Angels, March 2
Ray completed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his first start last week. The southpaw pitcher worked with 2024 Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal on a new changeup grip this winter. He had previously thrown a changeup in the past but had been on a break from it for a couple of years.
The Giants will be counting on Ray to assume a more normal workload in 2024. He returned from Tommy John surgery midway through last season and posted a 4.70 ERA with 43 strikeouts against 15 walks in 30.2 frames. The good news is that his four-seam fastball was back to its pre-surgery velocity, and he was able to get hitters to swing and miss at a high rate. The control was not nearly as sharp, which is to be expected given the procedure he underwent. He finished the year on the injured list following a hamstring strain.
Who is pitching for the SF Giants?
The Giants will likely ask Ray to complete three innings today. He will be followed by a bunch of relievers, including Enny Romero, Antonio Jimenez, Tyler Rogers, Camilo Doval, Sean Hjelle, Lou Trivino, and Keaton Winn. Jimenez is coming off of a rough appearance in which he yielded three earned runs but he was one of the early standouts in camp.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants will be facing off against young hurler José Soriano. Soriano is coming off of a nice year in which he tallied a 3.42 ERA in 22 appearances, including 20 starts. He can be a little wild with his control but he relies on a high 90's sinker with a knuckle curve.
