The SF Giants (47-42) dropped the first game of the series against the Athletics (37-53). They will lean on staff ace Logan Webb to get them back in the win column, and to give them a chance to still get a series win.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Athletics, July 5
Friday's game was a disappointing one for the Giants. They lost 11-2, as Justin Verlander continued his winless streak. He allowed six earned runs across three innings and finished the day with a 4.84 ERA on the year.
While Verlander only completed three innings, the bullpen remains intact. Mason Black followed with four innings of work, while Ryan Walker recorded a scoreless frame as well. The leverage arms should all be ready to go if their name is called tonight.
Needing the bullpen to cover a lot of innings is not usually an issue with Logan Webb on the mound. He continues to be one of the more durable arms in baseball, and currently leads the NL with 113.2 innings pitched. Overall, he has posted a 2.61 ERA, 2.31 FIP, 1.14 WHIP, 10.1 K/9, and a 5.29 SO/W rate in 18 starts for the Giants this season.
Who is hot for the SF Giants?
Willy Adames has been fantastic since Matt Chapman landed on the injured list on June 10. During that time, the veteran bat is slashing .300/.379/.525 (151 wRC+) with five home runs, 12 RBI, and 18 runs in 95 plate appearances.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants will face against against veteran pitcher Luis Severino, who is in the first year of a two-year, $45 million pact with a player option for 2027. He has struggled in his first year with the A's, posting a 5.09 ERA in 18 starts. Severino relies primarily on a sweeper-fastball mix. The fastball sits in the mid-90's, and it has two different looks. He throws a cutter and will use an occasional changeup.
