While many analysts seem to think the SF Giants had a pretty good MLB Draft, one of the more puzzling decisions they made was to not draft a catcher. That’s something that they are going to have to address at the trade deadline.
San Francisco clearly had a strategy to go heavy on pitching in the draft which made sense since their farm system and top prospect rankings were certainly a little light on promising young pitchers.
But in twenty rounds they did not take one catcher. That’s surprising given the fact that the team’s future at the catcher position is very much up in the air. They have intriguing young players who have shown some promise this year in Daniel Susac, Jesus Rodriguez, and Drew Cavanaugh but it is way too early to anoint any of them as the catcher of the future.
That’s why it would be smart for the Giants to target some young catchers in trades at the deadline. Here are a few they could go after.
Young catchers SF Giiants should target at trade deadline
Leo Bernal
The St. Louis Cardinals would make sense as a trade partner for the Giants. The Cardinals could use a starter like Robbie Ray and if the Giants could land No. 5 prospect in the St. Louis system Leo Bernal that would be a huge get.
He’s a switch-hitting catcher who is strong defensively and has hit .269/.355/.451 with 11 home runs and 52 runs batted in. St. Louis’s top prospect is catcher Rainiel Rodriguez so they may be willing to part with Bernal.
Owen Ayers
The Chicago Cubs could be another trade partner for San Francisco and No. 8 prospect Owen Ayers would be a good fit. He’s 25 years old, also a switch-hitter, and has a great arm. Not to mention he’s hitting .315/.427/.634 with 22 homers and 62 RBI in the minors this year.
Caden Bodine
The Tampa Bay Rays may have interest in both Ray and Luis Arraez, San Francisco’s most obvious trade chips. Caden Bodine is the No. 3 prospect in their system and he is a switch-hitter who has a good reputation defensively and is hitting .351/.418/.533 across three levels in the minors.
After the Giants traded Patrick Bailey they knew the future of the catcher position was going to be uncertain. Adding one of these players would bring another promising young catcher into the organization and give San Francisco more options behind the dish going forward.Â
