SF Giants fans were busy yesterday seeing whether the team could get a hit off Dylan Cease so it was easy to miss some smaller news nuggets for the Giants from roster moves to developments around MLB. Let’s dive right in and break it all down.
SF Giants news pieces you may have missed while team was getting whooped
Justin Verlander set to retire after season
The Giants got to see Justin Verlander pitch quite well last season in his one year with San Francisco. He has now announced that the 2026 season will be his last. It’s fitting that it will come with the Detroit Tigers, the team he broke into the big leagues with.
He has only made one start for Detroit this year as injuries have really slowed him down. He’s been trying to come back but it seems his body is not cooperating so he must see the writing is on the wall and knows that he won’t be able to go on after this year.
He will be invited to the All-Star Game and will surely be in the Hall of Fame someday after what has been a truly incredible career.
Jesus Rodriguez returns
The Giants placed outfielder Jonah Cox on the IL with an oblique issue and recalled catcher/utility man Jesus Rodriguez. He was called up earlier this season and had some nice moments but he cooled off at the plate and his defense left a lot to be desired.
He’s hitting .274/.353/.405 with five home runs and 28 runs batted in for Triple-A Sacramento. If he does get any playing time behind the plate we’ll have to see if his defense has improved at all.
Santos departs
The Giants brought back a familiar face in Gregory Santos in the offseason as part of their budget bullpen remodel. He pitched in three games for San Francisco and had a 3.60 ERA in five innings of work.
The Giants recently outrighted him to make room on the 40-man roster for Eric Cerantola and it seems Santos has elected free agency. It’s a shame we may never get to see a Giants pitcher with a scary blue face on his shoes ever again.

Walker demoted (again)
For the second time this season, Ryan Walker has been demoted to Triple-A. He came in on Wednesday in mop-up duty and pitched very poorly, allowing three earned runs. His ERA is now a ghastly 7.52 on the year and it’s hard to see him lasting in a Giants uniform much longer.
Carson Whisenhunt will take his place on the roster and will get the ball on Thursday night against Colorado which isn’t a shock after he was spotted near the ballpark earlier this week.
The Giants are so bad that it’s easy to check out in a season like this but for the sickos who can’t get enough of this team the season will continue onwards and we’ll be here to cover all those little roster moves that keep us all coming back for more.Â
