The SF Giants have had a lot of pitching struggles this season. They are looking for answers pretty much anywhere and a surprise sighting at the team hotel on Tuesday suggests there may be a shakeup in the starting rotation soon.

Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle posted on social media that she saw left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt go into the team hotel after the game which may suggest the Giants plan on calling him up soon.

Susan Slusser reported on Wednesday morning that Whisenhunt is in the clubhouse so it seems a move is imminent.

This probably wouldn’t be a bad move. Whisenhunt had one start earlier this season and pitched quite well, delivering five innings while allowing two earned runs which was made even more impressive since he did it on little sleep since he had to travel across the country to make it to the game in Atlanta.

Whisenhunt got sent back down after that outing but it seemed pretty clear he’d be back at some point this season especially since it wouldn’t shock anyone if Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, and maybe even Adrian Houser are all traded away in the next month.

The 25-year-old lefty has had a solid campaign in Triple-A Sacramento this season. In 77 and 1/3 innings pitched he has a 4.42 ERA with 82 strikeouts and 37 walks. Those are good numbers in the notoriously hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

Giants need to figure out rotation at some point this season

It’s clear the Giants are evaluating everything when it comes to the starting rotation right now. Manager Tony Vitello said the team may be open to putting Adrian Houser back into the rotation which shows just how desperate this team is for any answers right now.

Maybe they should send Trevor McDonald back down to the minors to make room for Whisenhunt on the roster. McDonald had a bad start on Tuesday night and his ERA on the season is now 5.46. He’s looked good at times but he may benefit from some more seasoning in the minors.

Pitching has been the team’s biggest issue this season. While this year has already been lost, the rest of this season is important to find out if any of their younger arms are legitimate rotation fixtures. Whisenhunt should get a lot of opportunities to prove himself the rest of this year so he has a chance to insert himself into the conversation for next year's rotation if he pitches well.
