The hot stove lit up in the morning hours on Monday. A trio of former SF Giants players including Sean Manaea, Joc Pederson, and Andrew McCutchen all agreed to new contracts.
SF Giants News: Sean Manaea, Joc Pederson, and Andrew McCutchen
Sean Manaea returns to the New York Mets on a three-year, $75 million deal
Sean Manaea joined the New York Mets on a two-year, $28 million deal last winter. This included an opt-out after the first season. That decision paid off after the left-handed hurler posted a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts with the Mets.
Manaea also had a couple of solid starts in the playoffs. This included an outing where he yielded only one earned run across seven innings in a 7-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the NLDS. The Los Angeles Dodgers knocked out the Mets in six games in the NLCS.
New York has had an impressive offseason headlined by signing superstar Juan Soto to a 15-year contract. They have added to the rotation by re-signing Manaea along with adding Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes.
Joc Pederson signs with the Texas Rangers on a two-year, $37 million deal
Joc Pederson is departing the NL West again after signing a two-year, $37 million deal with the Texas Rangers. The veteran bat has spent the past three seasons in the NL West. This included two years with the Giants followed by a lone season with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2024.
Of course, Pederson got his career started with the Dodgers in 2014 and he spent seven seasons with the club. The left-handed hitter was a force at the plate last year, posting a .908 OPS with 23 home runs and 64 RBI in 449 plate appearances with Arizona.
If the Giants wanted to commit to a full-time DH, reuniting with Pederson would have made plenty of sense. However, the club looks like it will rotate veterans at the DH spot barring an addition later in the offseason.
Andrew McCutchen returns to the Pittsburgh Pirates on a one-year, $5 million deal
Andrew McCutchen is returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates on a one-year, $5 million deal. He spent the first nine years of his career in Pittsburgh before being shipped to the Giants in a three-player deal. He made stops with the New York Yankees, Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers before returning to the Pirates in 2023. This is one of those signings that just feels right for baseball.
McCutchen still has gas in the tank. The right-handed bat posted a .739 OPS with 20 home runs and 50 RBI in 515 plate appearances with the Pirates in 2024. He has collected 2,152 hits, 429 doubles, and 319 home runs in his 16-year career.
