The SF Giants did something pretty remarkable over the weekend by taking two games out of three against the Milwaukee Brewers, the best team in baseball. Here are some news nuggets surrounding the team right now in the final week of August.
SF Giants news nuggets in final week of August
Matos on fire
One of the biggest developments with the Giants right now is the hot bat young outfielder Luis Matos is swinging. He just got called back up and he has been on a tear. He hit two home runs in the series in Milwaukee and helped the team in their comeback win on Sunday.
Matos has shown that he is a guy who really does benefit from consistent playing time. With right field up for grabs the rest of this season, Matos is making a strong argument to get the bulk of the playing time out there until he cools off.
We have seen flashes before from Matos, so before we pencil him into the Opening Day lineup for 2026 we will have to see how long he can sustain this hot streak.
Willy Adames' homecoming
While there was a lot of talk in the offseason after Willy Adames signed with the Giants about how good a guy he is and how good of a teammate he is, we really got to see for the first time just how much he meant to the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
He got several standing ovations over the weekend and the fans there clearly do have a lot of love for him for the four seasons he spent in Milwaukee. Of course, those claps turned to boos once he started hitting home runs against his former team, but it was still cool to see the reception he got from the Brewers fans.
Too little too late
It was refreshing to see the Giants play good baseball against a really good team in the Brewers. Milwaukee has the best record in the major leagues so to see the Giants play three really good games against such a stout opponent and win two of them was definitely a bit of a surprise given how poorly the Giants have played lately.
For fans hoping that the team fires manager Bob Melvin or makes other coaching staff changes, this series is one that could help Melvin and others keep their jobs. There is still a long way to go this season, but the fact that the Giants played good, clean, fundamental baseball and fought hard in all three games reflects well on Melvin.
It is a shame that the Giants have played such bad baseball and now find themselves with a less than one percent chance at the playoffs. We know that this team is capable of playing good baseball, they just have not been able to do it consistently for some time.
Unfortunately, it is too little too late for the playoffs but it definitely is more fun to see the Giants play good baseball and win. Who would have thought? The team has an off day on Monday but they will resume action at Oracle Park on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs.
