As of Sunday morning, all four SF Giants affiliates lead their respective leagues. The Eugene Emeralds, which leads the Northwest League with a 20-6 record, got a boost with the return of Jakob Christian and should be getting another one soon.
SF Giants minor league notes: Jakob Christian returns, Jancel Villarroel rehab assignment
1. Jakob Christain returns
At the beginning of May, Jakob Christian was activated from the injured list for the Emeralds. In a corresponding move, pitcher Trey Dillard was released. Dillard joined the Giants on a minor league deal in the offseason.
Jakob Christian has already been on a tear since returning from the injured list. He has six hits, including three doubles, and five RBI in eight at-bats. It is hard to be much more productive than that!
For the right-handed bat, this is a return to familiar territory. Christian was a fifth-round pick by the club in the 2024 draft out of the University of San Diego. He put up an. 815 OPS with 10 home runs and 60 RBI in 318 plate appearances with the San Jose Giants before earning a promotion and finishing the year with Eugene.
Christian has some of the best raw power in the organization. It translates nicely to the game due to his ability to lift and pull the ball with ease. On defense, he has experience at first base and the corner outfield spots.
2. Jancel Villarroel begins a rehab assignment
The Emeralds will soon get another boost when Jancel Villarroel is activated from the injured list. He began a rehab assignment with the Arizona Complex League Giants. He recorded one hit in four at-bats in his first rehab game.
Villarroel came over to the Giants in the offseason in a trade that sent Kai-Wei Teng to the Houston Astros. Teng always had good strikeout stuff, but it came with below-average command. It is hard to ignore that he has tamed some of those control problems since going to Houston.
The Giants very much have a type with position players and Villarroel fits that description. He is a multi-positional catcher with good contact skills. At times, that will get him into trouble, as he chases out of the zone with some frequency.
The right-handed bat has a knack for barreling up pitches. He is capable of using all fields, but he has a pull-heavy swing. His swing is designed more for line drives than slugging power, but he did see an uptick to eight home runs in 433 plate appearances across two affiliates last year.
