SF Giants may have gotten sneakiest steal of trade deadline in Erik Miller trade with Red Sox

The SF Giants are making tons of trades right now and the latest one will send left-handed reliever Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for infielder Marcelo Mayer which came shortly after the team traded Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees.

Drafted fourth overall by Boston back in 2021, Mayer was considered a top prospect just last year but hasn’t quite lived up to the reputation. He put up solid numbers in the minors but in his big league action so far he hasn’t been all that impressive.

UPDATE: Minor league outfielder Carlos Gutierrez is also going to Boston as part of this trade.

Over the last two years he’s hit .223/.278/.346 with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in 114 games. That’s not super inspiring, but maybe a return to the West Coast will do wonders for the Chula Vista native. He has the tools to be a good player, it's just a matter of putting it all together.

With guys like Mayer sometimes a change of scenery is what is needed to unlock their true potential. It may not be that simple but he is bound to get some opportunities with San Francisco the rest of the season if they use him at second base with Luis Arraez gone or third base with Matt Chapman injured.

Erik Miller was solid for Giants but they were wise to sell high on him

It stings a bit to give up Erik Miller since the lefty has shown just how good he can be when he is on his game, but Giants fans also know how inconsistent he has been and how his walk rate was always a cause for concern.

Still, in a season like this when the team has stunk it’s not a bad idea to sell high on Miller who was having a solid season with a 2.76 ERA on the year. The Giants learned last year in the Camilo Doval trade that it’s usually a good idea to sell high on bullpen arms.

There’s no guarantee that Mayer turns into something and if Miller goes on to be dominant in Boston while the Giants continue to struggle to close out games in future seasons then maybe it is a deal they will come to regret, but the upside is there with Mayer and maybe being back in California will help unlock his true potential.

Overall it seems like the Giants have gotten a lot of interesting young talent at the deadline which could end up being the main positive from this rough season. It would be a lot more fun if the Giants were buyers at the deadline but at least the future looks a little brighter.
