SF Giants manager Bob Melvin has been taking a lot of heat lately. With the team in free fall, it is only natural that he gets some of the blame. While it is not all his fault, if the team continues to spiral he has no other choice than to resign.
The Giants are falling apart before our very eyes. Their record is 59-62 after they were 41-29 on June 13 and were in first place of the National League West. They are losing games in embarrassing fashion, not even looking somewhat competitive as they get crushed at home even when their fans are showing up for them.
SF Giants manager Bob Melvin should resign if things do not get better
It has been ugly to watch and it is not clear what needs to change. The knee-jerk reaction is always to make a change at manager, but would that be the most prudent course for Buster Posey to take?
While it may seem like Melvin is not on the hot seat especially after the team already exercised his contract option for 2026, that does not mean he cannot be fired. A manager can obviously be dismissed at any time, but if things keep going this badly Melvin should not leave his fate up to Posey.
When the Giants did announce they were exercising Melvin's option, they were at the beginning of their tailspin. It was seen as a vote of confidence from Posey and the front office, a move that spoke volumes with the team playing so poorly that essentially communicated that Posey felt Melvin was still the right guy to turn things around.
Things have only gotten worse since then. The Giants keep on finding a new low and keep finding new ways to embarrass themselves. The players deserve blame as well since they are ultimately the ones who decide what happens on the field, but with the way the roster is currently constructed the Giants cannot really undertake some sort of massive roster overhaul.
The only course of action they can take is to try and get the most out of this roster as it is currently constructed. Right now, it does not seem like Melvin and his staff are equipped to get the most out of these players.
The last month and a half or so of the season is Melvin's last chance to prove that he still deserves to be manager. If this team can at least play respectable baseball for the rest of the season and finish with a record around .500, then he likely will have saved his job.
But if the nose dive continues and the Giants keep getting roundly embarrassed at Oracle Park and lose games in noncompetitive fashion, then Melvin should take the decision out of Posey's hands and resign. There are several candidates who could replace him and could likely get more out of this club.
As a respected longtime manager with deep ties to the Bay Area, it would be a selfless act to simply admit that he is not the right man for the job and that he failed to get the most out of the team. After Posey stuck his neck out for him back in July, Melvin should save him the embarrassment of having to fire him by resigning.
He still has a chance to prove this team has not completely quit on him, but if he cannot prove that then he needs to do the selfless thing and step away.
