Luis De La Torre had one of his best outings as a pro last week. The SF Giants left-handed pitching prospect was recognized as the Northwest League Pitcher of the Week.

The Eugene Emeralds continue to be the best team in that league, and by a wide margin. They have a 39-18 overall record. This is not too surprising. After all, many of the players on that roster headlined a San Jose Giants team that won the California League title in 2025.

Eugene now has some of the top position player prospects in the Giants' system. This includes Gavin Kilen, Dakota Jordan, Trevor Cohen, and Jhonny Level. Level has continued to produce after earning a promotion just last week.

Jordan and Kilen have been steady contributors throughout the season. Cohen got off to a slow start, but has picked it up lately. He does not offer much in terms of power, but has excellent contact skills and can impact the game with his speed and defense as well.

SF Giants prospect Luis De La Torre has gotten better as the season has progressed

On the pitching side. Luis De La Tore, Niko Mazza. Jacob Bresnahan, and Yunior Marte have anchored the rotation. Marte recently received a promotion to Double-A and De La Torre might not be far behind.

De La Torre pitched in the Arizona Complex League just last summer, along with Argenis Cayama and Keyner Martinez. Unlike Martinez and Cayama, De La Torre was assigned to the Northwest League to begin this season. That was an aggressive assignment given that he only had eight appearances in San Jose.

However, De La Torre is eligible for the Rule 5 draft in the offseason. Teams tend to be a bit more aggressive with players where they need to make a decision. That decision will be whether to protect him from the Rule 5 draft or not by adding him to the 40-man roster.

The lefty pitching prospect got off to a slow start in April. However, his numbers have improved as the season has progressed. That is often a promising sign for a prospect who is being challenged with an aggressive assignment.

Since May 1, De La Torre has pitched to a 2.10 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 20 walks in 30 frames for the Emeralds. This included a stellar outing last week, where he tallied six shutout innings with 12 strikeouts and one walk against the Everett AquaSox. If he continues to pitch this way, he may very well earn a promotion before the season concludes.

Eugene won that game by a score of 6-4, and salvaged the final two games of the series. Oddly enough, they lost four of the six games in that series.
