The SF Giants are searching for a new manager and they have reportedly interviewed several candidates already. One of these candidates is reportedly Brandon Hyde, the former manager of the Baltimore Orioles and a Santa Rosa native.
This news comes via reporter John Shea of the San Francisco Standard. Hyde managed the Orioles from 2019 to 2025 when he was fired mid-season after a rough start to the year.
SF Giants interview Santa Rosa native for open manager role
Hyde had a record of 421-492 with Baltimore and led the team to the playoffs twice, in 2023 and 2024. He even took home AL Manager of the Year honors in 2023 as the Orioles won 101 games.
Hyde was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California which is about an hour north of San Francisco. He went to Cal State Long Beach and played professional ball but never made it to the big leagues.
The 52-year-old spent time as a coach with the Miami Marlins and the Chicago Cubs before getting his shot with Baltimore. Things did not end great with the Orioles, so it is fair to wonder if Hyde is someone that president of baseball operations Buster Posey is really considering.
Hyde clearly has had success as a manager in the past, but the momentum in the manager search seems to be leaning towards Nick Hundley based on recent reporting. That does not mean it is a done deal. The Giants have reportedly interviewed others for the job as well. It just feels like Posey may have his mind set on Hundley given their familiarity and history together.
Still, it is good that the Giants are interviewing other people for the role. Hundley does not have any managerial experience. If the Giants are at all concerned about that, maybe they will go in another direction or perhaps they could hire someone like Hyde as a bench coach to help mentor Hundley a bit even if Hyde may scoff at the notion of being second in command to someone who has never managed before.
San Francisco's previous manager, Bob Melvin, had deep ties to the Bay Area so it is always tempting to hire someone who has a connection to the area. Hyde may not end up being the manager, but it does not hurt to bring him in and see if he blows Posey away.
