He thinks the Giants need to ensure they have enough depth in this department.

The SF Giants are most likely going to miss the playoffs so it is not too early to start doing a postmortem on the season. Giants insider Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area has already identified one key thing the Giants need to address in the offseason.

On the most recent episode of the Giants Talk podcast, Pavlovic made it very clear what he thinks the Giants need to do to get better in the offseason:

“Let's just be realistic about it. It has to be pitching, pitching, pitching this offseason. It has to be the rotation. It has to be more bullpen help. Maybe trade for some arms you like as well. That's what it's going to have to be.”

Pavlovic argues SF Giants need to go pitching-heavy in offseason

He says that the team should even forego other areas they can potentially upgrade like right field or second base in the name of improving the pitching staff and ensuring they have adequate depth.

It is hard to argue with him as manager Bob Melvin has had a difficult job trying to put together a workable rotation as of late. The lack of starting pitching depth has been a glaring weakness with the team having to rely on Kai-Wei Teng and Carson Seymour.

As for the bullpen, it began the year as a major strength for the Giants but after trading pieces away and losing guys to injury, it has become an obvious liability.

If the Giants had a little more pitching depth, perhaps they would have had a better chance at snagging the third and final Wild Card spot coming down the stretch this season.

There are a few key moves the Giants could definitely make to fulfill Pavlovic's vision. In the rotation, the Giants could bring back Justin Verlander who has said he plans to pitch in 2026. They could also go out and poach Zac Gallen from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Then, in the bullpen they could bring back Tyler Rogers who they traded away at the trade deadline.

That would put their rotation and bullpen in a better spot next season although there are surely other depth moves they could make to ensure they can withstand injuries throughout the season.

It may mean the Giants do not make any major offensive additions in the offseason, but Pavlovic is right that a lack of pitching depth is part of what helped sink San Francisco's playoff hopes in 2025 so it should be a point of emphasis in the offseason.
