The SF Giants have had some bad luck on the injury front as of late. It seems like they cannot keep any of their third basemen healthy as Christian Koss and Casey Schmitt both went on the IL. Let's look at all the injured Giants.

SF Giants injury updates: Chapman, Schmitt, Koss

Matt Chapman

What set off this chain reaction of third basemen injuries was Matt Chapman sliding back into first base on an attempted pickoff a few weeks ago where he jammed his right hand. Thankfully, Chapman appears to be on track to return before the All-Star break.

He could potentially return next home-stand for a series against the Philadelphia Phillies, but if not it would be great if he returned for the final series of the first half against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Casey Schmitt

After Chapman went down, Casey Schmitt was called upon to take his place. He did great, providing largely solid defense at third base while also going on a tear at the plate. Then, he got hit by a pitch in his left hand and the effects of that lingered to the point that the Giants had to put him on the IL.

His MRI came back clean and Schmitt was scratched from the lineup twice during the White Sox series so the hope is that 10 days on the IL is all he will need before he is ready to go.

When he does return, if Chapman is already back, he will most likely be put at second base. Given the struggles of Tyler Fitzgerald, Schmitt is now the team's best option at second base.

Christian Koss

After Schmitt went down, Christian Koss had to step up and play third base. He performed well too, racking up some hits for the team and being one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal lineup.

Then, on a ball he crushed to left-center field against the Arizona Diamondbacks that was ruled a double after fan interference, he came up lame and was limping as he dealt with a hamstring issue that landed him on the IL as well.

It is a shame that all three of these players got injured as they were swinging a hot bat. That has just been San Francisco's luck, or lack thereof, as of late as they try to get anything going on offense.

Jerar Encarnacion

Another injured Giant is Jerar Encarnacion. The outfielder and designated hitter was struggling mightily at the plate before injuring his oblique. When he is healthy, he is going to have to turn things around otherwise the Giants may have to move on from him.

One hopes that these players can come back soon and help the team because the Giants are in desperate need of some sort of spark as they are currently in free-fall.
